Nishad Kumar Facts

He was raised on a farm in village Badaun, Una.

Nishad was 6 years old when his right hand and forearm accidentally went into a fodder-cutting machine while he was assisting his mother at home. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Hoshiarpur, Punjab where the doctors decided to amputate his arm as nothing could be done to save it.

Upon his recovery, Nishad had initially felt disappointed. However, after having taken a keen interest in sports, he finally decided to join his school’s sports team and even competed in the 200m and 400m races.

In 2020, Nishad moved to Bengaluru to train under Satyanarayan, who coached the Rio Paralympics gold medallist Mariyyapan.

Nishad made his debut Paralympic games appearance at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Paralympics in August 2021, during which, he jumped 2.06 m in his first try and managed to achieve an Asian record at 2.06 m at the T47 event. However, he was topped by American Paralympian Roderick Townsend at 2.15 m, hence, earning him a silver medal.

Nishad was diagnosed with Covid-19 in early 2021. However, he managed to make a speedy recovery.
