BONNE TERRE, MO (KTVI)– It’s considered by some to be one of the top ten best places to go scuba diving.

The Bonne Terre Mine was voted by National Geographic and Fox News as one of the top ten best places to go scuba diving on the globe.

Ocean scientist and scuba diver Jacque Cousteau once came calling on these crystal clear waters.

The Bonne Terre Mine has one lonely carp to keep guard over this old lead mine.

It was a working mine until the price of lead dropped and it closed in 1962.

And while Maldives and Egypt are considered the top two, this national historic site open year round is a comfortable humid 58 degrees.

The views are spectacular with 100 foot visibility, so it’s no wonder divers and divas come calling.

As you ride around the billion gallon lake, it’s pretty incredible when you consider this was mined by hand and we’re on a lake, under the city of Bonne Terre.
